Jhan Thong

Jhag Thong

Let me start by saying Thai food never crossed my mind in NY, when I moved to San Francisco and I was working in Berkeley I tried Thai food for the first time. My boss then treated us to lunch every so often and it was Thai.  I learned to enjoy Thai. It is fresh and light compared to the MSG greasy filled Chinese food which I still love in NY. So I was working  in Marin and My co-worker Andrew  says you gotta try the Thai in North Gate Mall. I was like yeah okay mall food, he insisted so we went to lunch and let me tell you for $7 bucks i got my self a meal I would repeat at least once a month. I order white rice and (for $7 you get 2 or 3 items)Med spice curry chicken, mild green beens, and very spicy basil beef. But this time I got spring rolls (which I loved). I  love Thai now a days and you can’t beat a 7 buck meal that is just as good as a top notch Thai place.

Sol Food

One of my favorite places to eat in San Rafael, CA is Sol Food. It is a Puerto Rican restaurant. They have lots of things going for them. First thing they have great food and everything is fresh. I always order the ” bistec sandwich”, it is thinly sliced steak w/ grilled onions, avocado, swiss, and garlic mayo ( I get it without since I hate mayo) and it is pressed. Then it comes with this tangy clear hot sauce that I want to put on everything I eat…. I also got the “mofongo” which is green fried plantains mashed up with garlic. That is something I crave all the time.

The second thing is they are open till 10pm and I think there smaller location is open till 2pm on Fri & Sat. This place is definitely doing something right cause it is always packed. They have 2 locations a block from each other .The one on 4th is a small location only a few seats but the original one, the 2nd location is a big lime green building which has seating and the ambiance is great . You feel like your in a tropic food joint. The building made some of the locals angry cause the green color. This place just adds color and flare to the drab buildings around it. Check it out it’s worth the trip. I have seen some great comments at the Chow message boards

Fontana - Famous Pizza & Gyro

Fontana
I know I keep saying everything is the best, but this is… The Gyro was so good and the chicken kabobs are great too. This place is packed all the time. I get my Gyro without the Tzatziki Sauce, but with all the rest (pita, onions, tomato, and seasoning).

If you are ever in Queens check out:

NYC Pretzel

Vending cart
How could I resist, the smell of the toasting pretzel calling my name. Living in California i miss these things. So I had to grab one. I shared it with my daughter and she loved it.

NY Pizza

NY Pizza

I gotta say I just love NY pizza and living in San Francisco I miss it. Not only does most pizza in S.F. suck, but charging $22 for a Medium (which they call a large) really sucks. Also you need toppings to make it taste better so that adds up at $2.00 a topping.
